SIGMA 14–24mm F2.8 DG DN Art (Sony E‑mount) Review

Hello, this is Nagasaka from PalmTrees.
This time, I’d like to share my impressions of the SIGMA 14–24mm F2.8 DG DN Art (Sony E‑mount).

Table of Contents

Build & Exterior

Here it is compared with the Sony 16–35mm F4.

  • SIGMA 14–24mm — 795g
  • Sony 16–35mm — 518g

The difference is about 200g.

Some people may find it heavy, but as long as a lens stays under 1kg, I personally don’t feel a significant difference in real‑world use.

Since this is a bulbous front‑element lens, you do need to handle it with care.
However, the overall design is compact enough that it doesn’t feel overly delicate.

The lens includes an AF/MF switch and an AFL button.

On the rear side of the lens, you can mount drop‑in filters.

Impressions

  • The zoom direction is opposite from Sony’s native lenses, so some adjustment is needed
  • Compared to the previous 14–24mm versions (Canon/Nikon), this model is more compact and easier to handle—both physically and mentally
  • Barrel distortion appears on the wide end, pincushion on the tele end, but both are minimal
  • AF speed and accuracy are excellent
  • The advantage of having 14mm on the wide end is huge (Conversely, the tele end stopping at 24mm may be a drawback for those who want 35mm)
  • As expected from SIGMA, the lens is extremely sharp even wide open

These are my overall impressions.

Initially, the 24mm tele end was my biggest concern when considering this lens,
but after using it, I feel it’s not a real issue.

The benefit of having 14mm at F2.8 is far greater.

And if needed, you can crop the 24mm end by 1.5× to effectively get 35mm,
so the limitation at 24mm isn’t as restrictive as I expected.

For those comparing this lens with Sony’s 12–24mm F4, the choice is simple:

  • If you want the widest possible angle → Sony 12–24mm F4
  • If you want brightness and low‑light performance → SIGMA 14–24mm F2.8
  • Or, if budget allows → Sony 12–24mm F2.8

It ultimately depends on your needs and your budget.

The SIGMA 14–24mm F2.8 offers excellent image quality and outstanding cost‑performance,
making it a lens I can confidently recommend.

Thank you for reading. See you again.
