SIGMA 24mm F2 DG DN Contemporary Review

Hello, this is Nagasaka from PalmTrees.
This time, I’d like to share my impressions of the SIGMA 24mm F2 DG DN Contemporary.

Table of Contents

Build Quality

The lens features a physical AF/MF switch, which is a small but genuinely useful detail.

It also comes with an aperture ring.
Since it has click stops, this part may divide opinions.
Personally, for video use, I would have preferred a clickless design.

As I mentioned in my 50mm F2 DG DN Contemporary review,
the build quality of the i series is exceptionally high.

As a Lightweight “Cine‑Style” Lens Set

The first photo shows the 50mm, and the second shows the 24mm mounted.
Here are the weights and filter sizes:

  • 24mm — 365g / 62mm filter
  • 35mm — 325g / 58mm filter
  • 50mm — 350g / 58mm filter

Once I add the 35mm, this trio can function as a simple, low‑budget cine‑style lens set.
※ Since the filter sizes differ, step‑up rings are necessary if you plan to use filters across the set.

Is F2 “Enough”?

Of course, F1.4 or F1.8 has its appeal.
But in reality, F2 is the right choice for my use case.

As mentioned earlier, I purchased this lens primarily for video, not stills.

For video projects, I use the FX30, which has an APS‑C sensor.
With an F2 aperture on APS‑C, you can’t expect full‑frame‑level background blur.

But that’s perfectly fine.

For stills, a creamy background blur is attractive.
For video—especially client work—I want reliable focus more than extreme bokeh.

Sample Images

※ Shot on the Sony α6700, so the effective focal length is equivalent to 35mm.

Looking through the samples, you can see that due to the combination of focal length, aperture, and APS‑C sensor size,
this lens can produce background blur, but it’s not a lens that “relies on bokeh.”

Despite being part of the Contemporary line,
the sharpness and three‑dimensional rendering are excellent.

If you don’t need F1.4 and are looking for a compact,
high‑performance lens, this is a strong option.

I’m looking forward to adding the 35mm F2 soon,
and once I have the 24mm / 35mm / 50mm trio, I plan to start using them for work.

Thank you for reading. See you again.
